Netanyahu faces election concerns as Likud polling declines
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly facing significant political challenges ahead of the general elections scheduled for October 27. According to reports from the public broadcaster KAN, Netanyahu expressed concern in closed-door meetings that his Likud party has lost 10 seats and could lose the upcoming election if current trends continue. Netanyahu has also expressed skepticism regarding polls that favor him, suggesting the actual situation may be worse.
Recent polling data from Kanal 13 indicates a shift in the political landscape. Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party is polling at 24 seats, while Netanyahu’s Likud has dropped to 19 seats. In a survey regarding suitability for Prime Minister, Eisenkot received 46% support compared to 35% for Netanyahu. An anti-Netanyahu coalition is projected to hold approximately 60 seats, just one short of a governing majority.
Internal friction is also rising within the right-wing bloc. Netanyahu has publicly urged National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to unite with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to prevent the fragmentation of right-wing votes. Likud has criticized Ben Gvir for refusing to merge, accusing him of potentially handing power to a left-wing government. Additionally, former IDF general Ofer Winter has launched a new right-wing party, Amcha Yisrael, which aims to compete for the nationalist vote.
