Netflix releases Mexican period drama Mal de amores

Netflix has released the Mexican period drama series ‘Mal de amores’ (known in English as ‘Lovesick’), an adaptation of the 1996 novel by acclaimed author Ángeles Mastretta. Directed by Catalina Aguilar Mastretta and Humberto Hinojosa Ozcariz, the seven-episode series is set in Puebla during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, capturing the political turbulence leading up to the Mexican Revolution.

The story follows Emilia Sauri (played by Renata Vaca), a young woman from a liberal family who aspires to become a doctor despite the restrictive patriarchal standards of the era. The narrative explores her struggle for professional autonomy and personal freedom as she navigates a romantic triangle between Daniel Cuenca (Juan Pablo Fuentes), a revolutionary idealist, and Antonio Zavalza (Iván Amozurrutia), a pacifist physician.

While the characters and their specific romantic conflicts are fictional, the series is grounded in the real historical context of the Mexican Revolution and the political shifts involving figures like Francisco I. Madero and Victoriano Huerta.
