Netflix releases Mal de amores series

Netflix has released the seven-episode Mexican period drama ‘Mal de amores’ (known in English as ‘Lovesick’), an adaptation of Ángeles Mastretta’s 1996 novel. Directed by Catalina Aguilar Mastretta and Humberto Hinojosa Ozcariz, the series is set in Puebla during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, capturing the political turbulence leading up to the Mexican Revolution.

The narrative follows Emilia Sauri, portrayed by Renata Vaca, a young woman from a liberal family who aspires to study medicine despite the restrictive patriarchal standards of the era. The production explores themes of autonomy, professional ambition, and female liberation as she navigates a romantic triangle between Daniel Cuenca (Juan Pablo Fuentes), a revolutionary idealist, and Antonio Zavalza (Iván Amozurrutia), a pacifist physician.

While the central characters and their specific romantic conflicts are fictional, the series is grounded in the historical context of the Mexican Revolution and the political shifts involving figures such as Francisco I. Madero and Victoriano Huerta.
