Netflix Enables 4K Streaming on Chrome for Windows PCs

Netflix has updated its system requirements to list Google Chrome version 117 or later as supporting Ultra HD 2160p playback on compatible Windows computers. The feature works only on Windows 11 with current updates, a Netflix plan that includes Ultra HD, and when playback quality is set to Auto or High.

To achieve 4K, the PC must have suitable hardware – for example an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or newer, an AMD Radeon RX 400 series or newer, or a recent Intel or AMD processor – and may need Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extensions. A 4K monitor that supports 60 Hz and HDCP 2.2 (or an external display meeting the same standards) is required, along with a stable internet connection of at least 15 Mbps.

Chrome now matches Microsoft Edge in resolution, ending Edge’s previous advantage of exclusive 4K support on Windows. However, Edge and the Netflix Windows app still retain HDR support, which Chrome does not provide. On macOS, Chrome remains limited to 1080p while Safari can stream Ultra HD. The change arrived quietly, without a major announcement from Google or Netflix, but it allows Windows users to watch Netflix in 4K without switching browsers.
