Netflix 4K streaming on Chrome Windows
Overview
In late July 2026 Netflix announced that Google Chrome version 117 and newer would support Ultra HD (2160p) playback on compatible Windows 11 PCs, ending a prior limitation that gave Microsoft Edge exclusive 4K streaming on the platform. The rollout required a Netflix plan that includes Ultra HD, a stable 15 Mbps connection, and hardware meeting Netflix’s specifications, such as a compatible GPU and a 4K‑capable display with HDCP 2.2.
By early August 2026 coverage listed additional GPU options (including AMD Radeon RX 400‑series) and noted that some Windows 11 builds also need Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extensions. Chrome now matches Edge in maximum resolution, removing Edge’s exclusive advantage, though HDR support remains limited to Edge and the Netflix Windows app. Chrome on macOS stayed at 1080p, while Safari continued to offer 4K on supported Macs. The change arrived quietly, without a major announcement, but it allows Windows users to watch Netflix in 4K without switching browsers.
