Netflix launches Australian period drama 'My Brilliant Career' and writer initiative

Netflix is set to debut a six‑part period drama adaptation of Miles Franklin’s 1900 novel *My Brilliant Career*. The series, filmed in Australia, stars Philippa Northeast as the independent heroine Sybylla Melvyn and follows her struggle to become a writer while defying societal expectations. The production is part of Netflix’s broader push into Australian content.

Alongside the series, Netflix ANZ announced the “The Next Brilliant Career” initiative, a program for emerging female and non‑binary writers. Partnered with the Australian Writers’ Guild and state screen agencies, the scheme offers feedback, mentorship and a chance to pitch ideas directly to Netflix’s content team in Sydney. Applications are open until 18 August, with finalists selected from each Australian state and territory.
