Netflix series ‘Profundezas’ features creature inspired by giant squids

The Netflix miniseries ‘Profundezas’ has gained popularity, following a fisherman named Calvin Penney, played by Josh Hartnett, as he attempts to protect his family and community from a mysterious marine creature in a small Canadian town. The six-episode series features Charlie Heaton and Mackenzie Davis.

While the series has been noted for its visual effects and engaging start, some critiques suggest the pacing suffers in the middle due to underdeveloped characters and excessive subplots.

The creature depicted in the show is inspired by real-world biology. Marine biologist Annie Mercier, who consulted on the production, noted that the series draws from the existence of giant squids. These cephalopods can reach lengths of 10 to 15 meters and possess some of the largest eyes in the natural world.
