Netflix to give KPop Demon Hunters 2 wide global theatrical release

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has announced a significant shift in distribution strategy for the sequel to the animated phenomenon ‘KPop Demon Hunters’. Unlike the first installment, which debuted directly on the streaming platform, ‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’ is slated for a “very wide” and global theatrical release before arriving on Netflix.

Expected in 2029, the sequel’s wide cinema rollout marks a departure from Netflix’s long-standing preference for immediate streaming availability. Sarandos explained that the company aims to reach passionate audiences in theaters, noting that “films that succeed at the box office are not necessarily the ones that are most successful on Netflix.”

The strategy involves differentiating between various types of content. While art-house films may benefit from longer theatrical windows, mass-appeal family films like ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ will receive dedicated wide releases to maximize their reach across all demographics.
