Netflix expands Mexican content with Cantinflas classics and new originals

Netflix has announced a major expansion of its Mexican content library to celebrate Mexican Cinema Day on August 15 and mark its 15th anniversary in the country. A central part of this initiative is a special collection of 35 classic films starring the iconic comedian Mario Moreno Reyes, better known as Cantinflas. These films, including ‘El bolero de Raquel’, ‘Romeo y Julieta’, and ‘El gendarme desconocido’, will be available on the platform from September 1 until March 2027.

In addition to the Cantinflas collection, Netflix is introducing several new original projects and documentaries. These include ‘Facing El Chapo’ (or ‘La captura’), directed by Chava Cartas and starring Alfonso Herrera, which depicts the operation to capture Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán; ‘Surviving Hurricane Otis’; and ‘35 días’, a story about a journalist in rehabilitation. Other upcoming titles include ‘Ashes’, ‘El enemigo del pueblo’, and documentaries such as ‘Liliana’s Invincible Summer’ and a film about the orca Keiko.

Carolina Leconte, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Mexico and Licensing for Latin America, stated that the company aims to be a creative partner for local talent and provide an authentic perspective of Mexican life through bold storytelling.
