Netflix to Release Thriller 'Elize: Shadows of a Woman' on July 22
Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming Brazilian psychological thriller *Elize: Shadows of a Woman*. The film is a fictionalised retelling of the 2012 murder in São Paulo in which Elize Matsunaga killed and dismembered her husband, businessman Marcos Matsunaga.
The movie stars Lorena Comparato as Elize, with Henrique Kimura playing Marcos, and includes Miwa Yanagizawa, Julia Shimura and Denise Weinberg in supporting roles. It is directed by Felipe Vellas and written by acclaimed crime‑fiction authors Raphael Montes and Mariana Torres. Production is handled by Boutique Filmes, with Gustavo Mello producing and Renata Artigas, Marcelo Máximo and Adriana Gaspar as executive producers.
The creators say the project is meant to go beyond the crime itself. As Montes explained, “*This is not just a movie about a crime. The aim was to tell a story that would also make people think. We wanted to open up a conversation about violence – what led Elize to commit such a brutal act*.” Torres added, “*We wanted to show this woman’s duality. It’s a story people can relate to in many ways, but with the worst possible outcome*.” The film will premiere worldwide on Netflix on 22 July 2026.
