Heatwave hits Netherlands and Belgium with extreme temperatures

Extreme heat is affecting the Benelux region, prompting official heat warnings and the activation of national heat plans.

In the Netherlands, the RIVM has activated the National Heat Plan as temperatures are expected to rise significantly. In some areas, temperatures could reach 37 or 38 degrees Celsius. The KNMI has issued a yellow code for much of the country, noting that Friday is expected to be the hottest day, with heat intensity levels potentially reaching 9 on the newly introduced heat stress index. Authorities are advising vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and young children, to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity, and keep homes cool.

In Belgium, specifically in Flemish Brabant, a code orange for heat has been announced for August 13 and 14, with temperatures expected around 35 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to seek shade, use sun protection, and monitor the well-being of neighbors and family members. The extreme heat is also contributing to very dry natural conditions in the region.
