Netherlands Advances Major Bridge and Road Upgrade Projects

The provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland have begun a detailed exploration of options to widen the Rijnbrug in Rhenen. The 2018 preferred design is technically feasible but poses higher risks, costs and traffic disruption than originally estimated. Alternatives under review include modest reinforcement of the existing bridge, constructing a second parallel bridge, or replacing the structure with a wider bridge. The exploratory phase will start at the end of 2026, lasting six to twelve months, with construction targeted for 2030‑2032.

In North Holland, the provincial road N203 between the A9 and A8 corridors is being reconsidered to reduce traffic and noise near Krommenie and Assendelft. Five concepts have been studied: speed reduction only, a deep‑grade (depressed) road, lane reduction, rerouting toward the railway, and combinations thereof. The deep‑grade option promises the greatest reduction in noise and improves air quality, but it is also the most expensive and complex, with risks of ground settlement and extended traffic disruption. The province will decide on a preferred variant after the summer and develop a preliminary design early next year, while inviting public feedback.
