Netherlands advances transition to gas-free housing

The Netherlands is advancing its national policy to transition all homes away from natural gas by 2050. This transition is being managed locally through Heat Transition Visions, where municipalities determine when gas connections will be removed and what alternative heating sources, such as district heating or individual solutions, will be provided.

In the Pendrecht neighborhood of Rotterdam, the transition is already underway. Work has begun in Cluster A, where the first homes are being connected to district heating. In Cluster B, community engagement efforts are ongoing, with connections scheduled to follow after the summer of 2026. Efforts are also preparing to move into Cluster C to inform residents of upcoming changes.

As gas connections are phased out, homeowners face decisions regarding alternative heating. Pellet stoves are noted as a practical option because they use renewable wood pellets and can be integrated into existing central heating systems via water jackets, offering independence from the gas infrastructure.
