Netherlands approves green gas blending mandate for 2027
The Dutch lower house has approved the Green Gas Blending Obligation Act, establishing a national mandate for gas suppliers to incorporate biomethane into the energy supply starting in 2027. The legislation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease reliance on energy imports by utilizing green gas produced from waste and residual streams.
The obligation will scale progressively, beginning in 2027 and increasing through 2031, with the mandate remaining in effect at least until 2040. To ensure compliance, the law introduces a tradable Green Gas Unit certificate system. The mandate is designed to support the Netherlands' goal of producing at least 2 billion cubic metres of green gas by 2030.
Financial impacts for consumers are estimated to be relatively low; additional costs are projected to reach a maximum of 1.5 cents per cubic metre of gas in the first year, rising to a maximum of 9 cents by 2031. The bill now moves to the Dutch Senate for further review.
