Pepijn van der Stap arrested in ShinyHunters and Odido cyberattack probe
Dutch authorities have arrested 24-year-old Pepijn van der Stap in connection with an investigation into the ShinyHunters hacking group. Van der Stap, who previously operated under the alias ‘Umbreon’ and was convicted in 2023 for cybercrime, currently serves as the Offensive Security Lead at the Amsterdam-based firm Neo Security.
The arrest is linked to a major cyberattack on the Dutch telecom provider Odido, which resulted in the theft of data belonging to over 6 million customers. Investigators believe the breach began with a social engineering attack where a caller impersonated an IT employee to gain access to internal systems.
Separately, the ShinyHunters group has claimed responsibility for a significant data breach involving the FBI. The group allegedly stole 2-3TB of data from an online jobs board, potentially exposing sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, medical records, and intelligence assignments of FBI personnel. While the group initially issued demands to the FBI, they have since stated they do not intend to leak the stolen data, characterizing their actions as a ‘marketing campaign’ rather than an extortion attempt.
