Netherlands asylum application system faces criticism

VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN) and the Vereniging Asieladvocaten en -Juristen Nederland (VAJN) have reported significant failures in the new Dutch asylum application process implemented in June. Under the new system, applicants are required to complete their applications themselves using a tablet.

Researchers found that many applicants struggle to understand the questions, the assistance available to them, or the specific information required for follow-up interviews. There are also reports that applicants are unaware they can disclose trauma or sexual orientation, or that they have the right to state when they do not understand a question.

Logistical issues have also been identified, including asylum seekers being unaware of legal appointments, lacking transportation, or being moved to different shelters shortly before scheduled meetings. Lawyers have expressed frustration regarding short notice for appointments and the fact that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) provides the initial legal advice.

Additionally, the transition has impacted those under the previous system. Approximately 54,000 people were awaiting decisions when the new system launched. Concerns have been raised regarding long delays in communication from the IND and discrepancies in the duration of granted residence permits.
