Netherlands avoids West European bankruptcy wave

The Netherlands is currently avoiding the surge in business insolvencies affecting much of West Europe. According to the latest insolvency report from Allianz Trade, Dutch bankruptcies are projected to decrease by 5% in 2026 to approximately 3,470.

However, specific sectors in the Netherlands are showing signs of decline. Bankruptcies in the transport and storage sector rose by 11% through August 2026 compared to the previous year. The construction sector saw an 8% increase, while business services experienced a 16% rise. These trends are attributed to high financing costs, sustained energy prices, and moderate economic growth prospects.

Allianz Trade forecasts a 3% increase in Dutch bankruptcies for 2027. On a broader scale, West Europe is expected to see a 4% rise in 2026, driven largely by record numbers in France and Germany. Globally, business insolvencies are expected to rise for the fifth consecutive year, with a projected increase of 5% in 2026 and 1% in 2027.
