Netherlands begins nationwide collection of prohibited fireworks
Following a nationwide ban on most consumer fireworks in the Netherlands, more than 140 kilograms of explosives have been handed in during the initial days of a government collection initiative. The Ministry of Justice and Security reported that collection points in Terneuzen, Middelburg, and Venlo have already processed significant amounts of prohibited items, including rockets, shots, and flash powder.
To facilitate the transition, the government is deploying mobile collection points across various Dutch cities, including Lochem, Maastricht, Breda, and Eindhoven, through early October. In Tilburg, a specific one-time, anonymous collection event is scheduled for September 9, 2026, at the local recycling center to allow residents to dispose of illegal stock safely.
Law enforcement also continues to intercept illegal shipments. In Wemeldinge, police seized nearly 1,500 pieces of prohibited fireworks, including high-category explosives, from a garage. According to the Public Prosecution Service, approximately 29,000 kilograms of fireworks had been intercepted across the country as of mid-July.
