Netherlands Buitenspeeldag Mobilises 400,000 Children for Outdoor Play

On Wednesday 10 June, the nationwide Buitenspeeldag organised by Jantje Beton turned towns and parks across the Netherlands into large outdoor playgrounds. In Soest, Baarn and Bunschoten the municipality provided temporary “play streets” and a variety of activities—spring‑kisses, sport tournaments, graffiti workshops and a village‑wide puzzle hunt. In Zwolle’s Park de Wezenlanden, Univé hosted a free play afternoon for up to one hundred children, featuring games such as Twister XXL, tag and obstacle courses.

Jantje Beton cites a recent monitor showing that roughly 400 000 Dutch children aged 6‑12 rarely play outside, with 21 % reporting little time for outdoor activity and 55 % wanting more. Neuroscientist Erik Scherder warned that “if we don’t get children playing outside now, we will burden generations with mental and physical problems.” Organiser Lucy Lenderink added that “outdoor play contributes to health, motor development and social skills.” The events aim to encourage children to leave screens behind, improve physical fitness and foster social interaction.

The coordinated effort seeks to spark lasting changes in children's daily habits, hoping that the fun of one day will translate into more frequent outdoor activity throughout the year.
