Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman resigns after World Cup loss to Morocco

Netherlands men's national team head coach Ronald Koeman announced on X that he will step down from his position following the team's 3‑2 defeat on penalties to Morocco. The match, which ended 1‑1 after regular time, was the round‑of‑16 knockout game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Koeman, 63, has been in charge since 2023 and previously led the Dutch side to the 2021 European Championship final and a second place in the 2018‑19 UEFA Nations League. Before returning to the national team he spent a year managing Barcelona. His resignation comes after a disappointing tournament in which the Netherlands failed to progress beyond the first knockout round.

The Moroccan team will advance to the quarter‑finals to face Canada. Koeman's departure marks the end of a brief but eventful tenure with the Dutch squad.
