Netherlands construction sector faces 73,000 worker shortage
The Economic Institute for Construction (EIB) reports that the Dutch construction sector requires approximately 73,000 new employees over the next three years to meet goals for housing, grid expansion, and infrastructure renovation.
Competition for technical personnel, such as electricians and mechanics, is intensifying due to the expansion of the Dutch Ministry of Defence, which aims to increase its workforce to 100,000 by 2030. The EIB warns that this overlap in required skill sets could delay critical societal projects. The defense sector is expected to create an additional annual demand for about 5,100 full-time positions through 2035.
While 52,000 workers are expected to enter the field through education, roughly 21,000 positions must be filled through external recruitment. The EIB notes that while foreign labor could help, challenges such as housing shortages and shifting political sentiments regarding labor migration may limit the influx of new workers.
