Netherlands court acquits man of Princess Amalia kidnapping plot
A 33-year-old man from Groningen has been acquitted of planning to kidnap Princess Amalia of the Netherlands. A court ruled that while the defendant was experiencing a psychosis, there were no actual plans to carry out a kidnapping.
The man was arrested in January 2026 after shouting threats from a hotel balcony in The Hague. During his arrest, he was found in possession of two axes featuring the carved words Alexia, Mossad, and Sieg Heil. Investigations revealed the defendant suffered from schizophrenia and held a delusional belief that he was in a relationship with Princess Amalia, with intentions to marry her and live in Poland.
The court concluded that his actions were the result of delusions and an obsession with the royal family rather than criminal intent. Although the prosecution had requested mandatory psychiatric treatment (TBS), the court determined the offenses were not serious enough for such a measure and lacked sufficient information to issue a formal care order.
