Dutch kidnapping plot investigation involving royal family

Overview

A 33-year-old man, Anne Romke van der H., appeared before a judge in The Hague accused of preparing an attack against Dutch Princesses Amalia and Alexia. While prosecutors stated they lacked sufficient evidence to prove an intent to murder the princesses, they maintained there was enough evidence to support a charge of attempting to deprive Princess Amalia of her liberty.

The case stems from the suspect’s arrest in January, during which authorities found axes inscribed with ‘Alexia’, ‘Mossad’, and ‘Sieg Heil’, alongside a note mentioning ‘Amalia’, ‘Alexia’, and ‘bloedbad’ (bloodbath). During proceedings, the defendant testified he had been experiencing a two-year psychotic episode. He claimed he believed he had a romantic relationship with Princess Amalia and even suggested he was linked to her under the codename ‘Blutbad 400’ for a secret mission, believing he had received orders to undergo ‘survival training’ with her in Poland.

Prosecutors have sought mandatory psychiatric treatment for the defendant. Although the court ruled there was currently no legal basis for further pretrial detention, the suspect was released pending a verdict scheduled for August 31, 2026. In response to the allegations and the suspect's release, the Dutch Royal Palace has increased security measures for the princesses and their family.
