Netherlands courts impose prison and community‑service sentences for protest violence

Three men were sentenced by a Dutch court in The Hague to conditional prison terms for their roles in violent clashes surrounding a protest against the country’s asylum and migration policy on 20 September. The sentences ranged from one to eight months and followed attacks on police officers, horses and vehicles, including the throwing of a umbrella that injured a press photographer.

A separate case saw a 20‑year‑old man from Delft given a 150‑hour community‑service order, of which 50 hours are suspended, for throwing a plastic bag at a member of the Mobile Unit (ME) during unrest in The Hague’s Schilderswijk district after Morocco’s victory over the Netherlands in a World Cup match. The court noted his lack of responsibility and imposed a two‑year probation period.

Both rulings reflect the Dutch judiciary’s response to recent public disturbances involving police aggression and property damage.
