Netherlands debates wealth tax reforms to address inequality

Political debate in the Netherlands is intensifying regarding how to tax the wealthiest citizens to address wealth inequality. While there is broad public support for increasing taxes on wealth rather than labor, experts warn that certain tax structures may disproportionately affect different groups.

Proposed measures include addressing inheritance and gift taxes, limiting tax loopholes in Box 2, and potentially abolishing mortgage interest deductions. However, critics note that increasing taxes in Box 3—which covers savings, investments, and second homes—could inadvertently impact elderly citizens who rely on savings or rental income for their livelihood.

Observers, including former fiscal officials now at the IMF, suggest that the Netherlands must carefully define which forms of wealth contribute to economic activity. They warn that if income from labor is structurally taxed more heavily than capital gains, it could lead to a concentration of economic and political power among a small group of billionaires, similar to trends observed in the United States.
