Netherlands Defence conducts Centaur Hammer helicopter exercises

The Netherlands Ministry of Defence is conducting the ‘Centaur Hammer’ military exercise in Northeast Netherlands, involving Apache combat helicopters. The training, scheduled for various dates in August, focuses on low-altitude flight maneuvers and mission preparation in realistic conditions.

During the exercise, helicopters may fly as low as 30 meters above the ground. The training area includes parts of the Borger-Odoorn and Veendam municipalities, with residents in Mid-Drenthe also likely to hear and see the aircraft. Flights are scheduled on weekdays between 09:00 and 16:30.

To minimize disruption, Defence is attempting to avoid densely populated areas, industrial zones, and hospitals. Additionally, helicopters must maintain a minimum altitude of 300 meters over the Zuidlaardermeer protected nature reserve. Due to the potential for noise to disturb livestock, authorities have advised farmers to take precautions, such as keeping animals indoors or in sheltered pastures.
