Dutch military helicopter training
Overview
In the summer of 2026, the Netherlands staged a series of helicopter training drills. In late July, the Royal Netherlands Air Force flew Chinook transport helicopters at low altitude over the Achterhoek municipality of Berkelland and conducted an urban‑area operation drill in Enschede, demonstrating rapid loading, unloading and take‑off within ten minutes.
A month later, the Defence Helicopter Command announced the “Centaur Hammer” low‑fly exercise in the north‑east, using four Apache attack helicopters from 17–20 August and 24–25 August. The drill involves grass‑height flight, ground‑target attacks, concealment tactics, and a temporary low‑fly zone covering several municipalities, including Westerveld, Assen, Het Hogeland, Borger-Odoorn, and Veendam. To extend operational range, a Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP) will be established.
To minimize disturbance, organizers are avoiding densely built‑up, industrial, and hospital zones. Helicopters must maintain a minimum altitude of 300 meters over the Zuidlaardermeer protected nature reserve. Because sudden noise can startle livestock, particularly young animals, officials have advised farmers to keep animals indoors or use radios in stables to mask the sound.
