The Netherlands football federation confirmed that medical staff excluded him from the squad just days before the tournament begins in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Coach Ronald Koeman announced the replacement, selecting Arsenal teammate Lutsharel Geertruida. The federation’s statement added, “We are with you, Jurrien.” The Netherlands remain in Group F with Japan, Sweden and Tunisia, entering the competition with seven fit defenders.

Timber’s injury and subsequent omission represent a notable setback for the Dutch side as they prepare for their opening matches.
