Netherlands sees calm start to Dog Days, weekend warmth expected

The week beginning Monday 20 July, marking the start of the Dutch "Hondsdagen" (Dog Days), is forecast to begin with calm summer weather. Temperatures will range from about 20 °C in the west to 22 °C in the east, with mainly dry conditions and a mix of sun and clouds. A north‑west wind will bring cooler air.

On Wednesday, showers are expected across the country, especially in the northeast, as the north‑west wind intensifies to moderate‑strong. The rain may be accompanied by stronger breezes along the coast and around the IJsselmeer. Temperatures will stay in the low 20s.

Temperatures rise toward the weekend, with Thursday heating up to 19‑22 °C, Friday reaching 20‑25 °C and Saturday likely to be broadly warm (21‑25 °C). On Sunday the chance of isolated showers returns, but overall the weather remains pleasant. The first day of the Dog Days traditionally signals the weather patterns for the next four to six weeks, and a sunny start often forecasts a warm summer.

The Dog Days run from 20 July to 20 August and derive their name from the period when the star Sirius, the "Dog Star," is not visible, a tradition dating back to Roman times.
