Netherlands electricity grid faces capacity challenges and oversized connections
The Netherlands is facing ongoing challenges with electricity grid capacity, though some relief is appearing through smarter usage. According to Netbeheer Nederland, the waiting list for regional grid connections decreased to 8,558 applications by the end of June 2026, down from 8,612 at the end of 2025. However, the total requested capacity remains higher than last year. TenneT also reported a reduction in its waiting list for high-voltage connections.
Despite these shifts, the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has identified that over 300,000 households and small businesses may be using unnecessarily heavy power connections. These oversized connections can cost thousands of euros more annually than standard ones. The ACM suggests that users can save money by managing peak usage—such as not running heavy appliances simultaneously—rather than paying for excess capacity.
While reducing connection size costs approximately 300 euros, the ACM warns that due to grid congestion, users might face long waiting lists if they later require a heavier connection.
