Netherlands energy fund gap affects 119,000 households

Approximately 119,000 Dutch households are facing a 'blind spot' in energy assistance due to extreme conservation efforts. According to a letter from Minister Vijlbrief, these low-income households in poorly insulated homes often keep their thermostats at 15 or 16 degrees Celsius to manage costs. Because the Noodfonds Energie (Energy Emergency Fund) requires energy bills to exceed 8% to 10% of gross income to qualify, these households' reduced consumption prevents them from meeting the eligibility criteria.

The Noodfonds Energie has a budget of 193 million euros for the upcoming winter, intended to support roughly 500,000 households. However, the Armoedefonds has criticized this gap, noting that the fund does not address 'hidden energy poverty.' While the average energy-poor household faces a yearly deficit of €1,100, the fund provides an average of only €360 in support.

In preparation for the winter season, residents are advised to perform maintenance on heating systems and ensure proper ventilation. Experts recommend checking radiators, thermostats, and ventilation grilles to maintain air quality and prevent moisture buildup without sacrificing warmth through drafts.
