Netherlands energy market sees rising tariffs and shifts in contract types

Dutch households face rising energy costs, with average net tariffs for gas and electricity projected to increase by 3.38% in 2026. According to the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), new fixed energy contracts have recently been priced 1.5% to 3% higher than previous months, while variable rates have remained relatively stable.

There is a growing trend toward fixed and dynamic energy contracts in the Netherlands. Dynamic contracts allow prices to fluctuate with real-time market rates, whereas fixed contracts provide price certainty for the duration of the agreement. Consumers are advised to consider contract end dates and potential cancellation fees when comparing providers.

Due to high gas prices, concerns regarding the reliability of energy suppliers have increased. The ACM has intensified its oversight of providers, particularly those ceasing to offer fixed contracts. To assess a supplier's stability, consumers can evaluate four key indicators: possession of an independent ACM license, the age of that license, the size of the parent company or customer base, and the absence of recent regulatory fines or increased supervision.
