Netherlands faces defense integrity probes and EU asylum ruling

The Dutch Ministry of Defence is facing intense scrutiny following reports of financial mismanagement and integrity breaches. Investigations by the Public Prosecution Service and the National Police are targeting five officials and a former marine officer suspected of misconduct regarding arms deliveries to Ukraine. One specific project involving the purchase of 100 patrol boats, valued at over 400 million euros, is under investigation for potential nepotism and the leaking of confidential information.

This follows a report from the Netherlands Court of Audit, which identified 4.4 billion euros in errors and uncertainties regarding the ministry's 2025 budget. The audit noted that 3.6 billion euros was spent without proper adherence to procurement rules and highlighted a lack of adequate policies to detect fraud and corruption.

Separately, the European Court of Justice has ruled against the Dutch government's practice of suspending asylum applications from Ukrainians. The government had previously set aside approximately 140,000 applications from those seeking protection under the Temporary Protection Directive. Minister Van den Brink acknowledged that the decision to not process these applications was made due to the high volume of applicants, but the court has mandated that they must now be formally assessed.
