Netherlands faces plumber shortage despite rise in companies

An analysis of Chamber of Commerce data reveals that over 4,000 new plumbing companies have been established in the Netherlands over the last decade. As of the third quarter of this year, 11,500 plumbers are registered, representing an increase of nearly 60 percent compared to the same period in 2016.

Despite this growth, a significant labor shortage persists. According to the industry organization Techniek Nederland, demand for technical personnel has surged due to new construction, home sustainability initiatives, and climate adaptation. The organization reports that there are currently approximately 30,000 vacancies for technical professionals.

The sector faces challenges from an aging workforce, which is expected to lead to more departures in the coming years. While interest in vocational training for mechanical installations has risen by nearly 20 percent over the last four years, officials emphasize the need for more people to undergo retraining to address the deficit.
