Netherlands faces rising economic and social risks from extreme weather
The Netherlands is facing increasing challenges from extreme weather, specifically heatwaves, drought, and heavy rainfall. While Amsterdam has expanded its network of cooled public spaces from 12 to 78 locations to protect vulnerable citizens, national preparedness remains uneven. Currently, only 130 of the 342 Dutch municipalities have a formal heatwave response plan.
From an economic perspective, ABN AMRO warns that businesses must invest in climate resilience to avoid production losses and competitive disadvantages. Research indicates that labor productivity drops by 2 percent for every degree Celsius above 25 degrees. Sectors such as agriculture, inland shipping, and construction are already experiencing disruptions due to heat and low water levels.
Experts suggest that while temporary measures like fans and cooling centers are helpful, long-term solutions require structural changes, including increased urban greenery, improved building insulation, and the implementation of water buffers and green roofs.
