Netherlands faces rising nuisance and aggression from fatbike riders

Municipalities and political groups in the Netherlands are grappling with increasing nuisance caused by fatbikes, often described as low-quality electric bicycles imported from China. These vehicles are frequently used by young riders who engage in dangerous maneuvers, such as riding through pedestrian zones or carrying multiple passengers.

In Gouda, the CDA political party reported 74 complaints regarding fatbike incidents. These reports include 40 cases of near-collisions or traffic hazards and 23 instances of aggression, threats, or violence. One reported incident involved a resident sustaining a broken nose after being struck by a rider. Notably, 57 of these incidents were not reported to the police or local government, with many citizens expressing a lack of confidence in law enforcement's ability to intervene.

In Dordrecht, local officials are debating potential solutions, including area bans to protect the city center, though previous motions to implement such restrictions narrowly failed. Similarly, in Papendrecht, there are proposals to declare certain shopping areas off-limits to fatbikes to mitigate public disturbance.
