Netherlands Finance Minister warns of strict budget limits amid deficit concerns

Dutch Finance Minister Eelco Heinen has signaled that requests for additional funding from colleagues will face a ‘closed door’ following warnings from the CPB regarding an increasing budget deficit. The CPB projects the deficit will reach 2.8 percent of GDP this year, remaining just below the European 3 percent threshold, with a forecast of 2.1 percent in 2027.

Economic forecasts indicate that while purchasing power is rising this year, it is expected to decline next year. This decline is attributed to factors including geopolitical tensions and planned tax increases. Prime Minister Rob Jetten noted a more pessimistic outlook than the CPB, suggesting less fiscal space than the agency estimates.

The minority government is currently navigating complex budget negotiations involving significant cuts to social safety nets and increased defense spending. To secure majorities, the cabinet is engaging in discussions with various opposition parties, including Pro, JA21, ChristenUnie, SGP, 50Plus, and Volt, to seek political commitment on upcoming fiscal plans.
