Netherlands healthcare shifts toward home care and innovation
The Netherlands is facing a shift in elderly care as more seniors receive long-term support at home rather than moving to nursing homes. Experts warn that for this transition to be successful, housing and neighborhoods must be redesigned to support communal living and accessibility. Without suitable environments that foster social connection and proximity to services, the pressure of care may simply shift from institutions to the doorsteps of elderly citizens, increasing the risk of loneliness.
To address rising care demands and a shrinking workforce, healthcare organizations are turning to innovation. In collaboration with insurer CZ, new innovation funds have been established for elderly and disability care. One practical application being tested by the organization Amarijn is voice-to-text reporting. This technology allows caregivers to dictate reports via mobile devices, saving significant time previously spent on manual data entry and allowing more focus on direct client interaction.
