Netherlands activates National Heat Plan as temperatures rise to 35 °C

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) activated the National Heat Plan on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., issuing a nationwide code‑yellow warning. Forecasts predict temperatures of 30‑35 °C across the country, with peak feels of up to 37 °C in places such as Helmond and Deurne, and a risk of heavy thunderstorms with strong gusts and hail.

Health authorities urge extra care for vulnerable groups – people over 75, children, and those with chronic illnesses – advising ample water intake, avoidance of strenuous activity between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., and keeping homes cool. The plan also triggers guidance for caregivers and care facilities.

Numerous outdoor events have been altered or cancelled because of the heat: the Vuurtorenloop in Hoek van Holland was scrapped, the Grachtenloop in Haarlem was shortened to 5 km with added water stations, the Climate Classic bike ride was cut, and several festivals and runs have been postponed or reduced in length. Additional measures such as extra water points, shade, and increased medical staff are being deployed at remaining events.

Officials recommend staying hydrated, seeking shade, using sun protection, and monitoring local weather updates, especially where code‑orange thunderstorm alerts are in force.
