Netherlands heatwave leads to cancellation and postponement of local festivals

A severe heatwave prompted Dutch authorities to cancel or postpone several outdoor events. The municipality of Zoetermeer cancelled the Veteranendag scheduled for 27 June 2026 after the KNMI issued a red weather warning and safety officials warned of extreme temperatures. Mayor Bezuijen emphasized that visitor, participant and staff safety took precedence.

In the town of Aalten, the annual RestantenDag, normally held on 27 June, was moved to 4 July because of the ongoing heat. The related Korendag concerts celebrating the local choir’s 70‑year anniversary were also shifted. Organisers cited the same heat concerns in deciding to delay the festivities.

Both decisions were made on advice from the Veiligheidsregio Haaglanden and the national weather service, highlighting the impact of the heat alert on community events across the Netherlands.
