Netherlands heatwave lifts wine harvest prospects while straining potato crops

A prolonged heatwave and dry summer across the Netherlands has produced mixed effects on agriculture. Winegrower Bruno Suter of Wijndomein De Boe in Koudekerke said the warm, dry conditions are favourable for grape ripening, reducing the risk of fungal disease and allowing a harvest quality comparable to the previous year, though yields may be slightly lower due to smaller berries.

In contrast, potato farmers are reporting reduced tuber size and harder skins as the soil stays dry, forcing concerns over overall output. The broader weather pattern has sparked discussion about climate change, with Suter noting that while the hotter, drier climate aids his trade, it is less desirable for other crops and raises long‑term sustainability questions.
