Netherlands heatwave prompts Parkvilla closure and staff backlash at Efteling

A red‑alert heatwave has hit the Netherlands, leading authorities to deem conditions a serious health risk. Cultural centre Parkvilla announced it would close its doors on 26‑27 June, canceling all activities to protect visitors, staff and volunteers.

In contrast, the Efteling amusement park chose to remain open as scheduled, sparking criticism from employees. Staff complained that insufficient measures were taken to safeguard guests and workers, pointing to the extreme temperatures and lack of shade. While other Dutch parks such as Walibi and Hellendoorn shut down, Efteling’s decision has heightened concerns over heat‑related health risks.
