Netherlands holds local commemorations for August 15 anniversary

Local commemorations across the Netherlands are expanding to mark the end of World War II and the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies on August 15. This year, 82 local ceremonies are scheduled throughout the country, ranging from Marum to Heerlen, allowing citizens to participate in remembrance closer to home.

In Leiden, the commemoration at the Wereldmuseum focuses on connection and intergenerational dialogue. Organizers aim to move beyond formal ceremony to address intergenerational trauma and the experiences of third and fourth-generation descendants of those from the former Dutch East Indies. The event features a growing flag line symbolizing community diversity and the tradition of 'nasibungkus,' a simple meal originally distributed by the Red Cross after the liberation.

Many of these local events, including those in Zeewolde, incorporate shared meals to foster community and meeting. These gatherings serve to honor the victims of the war in Southeast Asia while providing a space for various communities, including Moluccans and Peranakan-Chinese, to connect.
