Netherlands homeowners face double VAT on EV charging via VvE

Electric vehicle owners who charge their cars through a homeowners' association (VvE) in the Netherlands are being charged VAT twice – once by the electricity supplier and again by the charging‑point operator. The homeowners' advocacy group Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH) says this can add up to €190 per year for a driver who uses only the VvE charger.

VEH has asked Finance Minister Eelco Eerenberg to introduce a specific exemption or a simplified procedure to prevent the double tax, arguing that the current situation contradicts government policy aimed at promoting electric mobility. While a VvE could register as a VAT‑paying entrepreneur to recover the tax, the required administration is considered burdensome for many boards. The association warns that the issue will grow as more apartment owners switch to electric cars.
