Netherlands homes increasingly adopt home batteries to store solar power

Dutch households with rooftop solar panels are turning to home batteries to capture excess daytime electricity that would otherwise be fed back to the grid. By storing this surplus, owners can use the energy later in the evening or during periods of low solar output, reducing reliance on utility supply and mitigating the impact of fluctuating electricity prices.

The size of a battery system is chosen based on a home’s total energy use, solar generation, and future plans such as electric‑vehicle charging or heat‑pump installation. While batteries increase self‑consumption of solar power, they do not make a house completely independent of the grid, especially in winter when solar production drops.
