Netherlands hosts community summer programs in Leeuwarden and Oud‑Lutten

Solidair Friesland organised a five‑week summer programme in Leeuwarden from 6 July to 15 August, offering sport, creative workshops and talent‑development activities for children, teens, newcomers and residents. The initiative, run with the COA and local Ukrainian refugee shelters, involved more than 80 volunteers. Project leader Geeske de Vries said, “We want children and youth to discover their talents, have fun and feel carefree despite the difficult circumstances they face.” Director Roger Dragstra added that the programme “is about more than entertainment; it connects people equally and gives them a sense of belonging.”

In the neighbouring municipality of Hardenberg, the village of Oud‑Lutten kicked off the 35th edition of its Bouwvakfeest two days early. The two‑day festival attracted around 3 000 visitors and featured live bands, a DJ (Hoempa Henk) and various attractions. Henk remarked, “I try to entertain people with music – it’s always a great party.” Attendees praised the intimate, convivial atmosphere compared with larger events.

Both events illustrate how Dutch communities are using summer festivals to foster social cohesion and provide recreational opportunities during the school holidays.
