Netherlands housing shortage drives interest in co-ownership
Due to the ongoing housing shortage in the Netherlands, more people are exploring co-ownership as a way to enter the market. By pooling incomes with friends, buyers can often secure higher mortgages and access larger properties that would be unaffordable on a single income.
In a co-ownership arrangement, multiple individuals are listed on the deed and share a mortgage. The ownership shares do not need to be equal; the property deed can specify different percentages of ownership based on individual financial contributions. However, challenges remain, as there are currently few lenders willing to finance homes with multiple buyers.
