Netherlands implements nationwide consumer firework ban

A nationwide ban on most consumer fireworks has been in effect in the Netherlands since August 1. The ban prohibits the possession, transport, storage, and use of fireworks in categories F2, F3, and F4. Only category F1 fireworks, such as sparklers and small crackers, remain legal for public use.

Police forces, including Midden-Nederland, are preparing for increased enforcement during the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations. Authorities will conduct extra checks on the trade, storage, and possession of illegal fireworks. Violators may face fines, criminal charges, or the seizure of materials. The ban aims to reduce injuries, property damage, and violence against emergency responders.

To assist with compliance, local municipalities and collection points are encouraging residents to dispose of illegal fireworks safely. In Tilburg, a one-time anonymous collection event is scheduled for September 9 at the local recycling center. Residents are urged not to dispose of fireworks in household waste or leave them on the street to prevent fire hazards and environmental damage.
