Retail trends show significant differences for cross-border shoppers. Investigations indicate that a comparable basket of goods is often cheaper in Germany, particularly for meat, fish, dairy, and branded beverages. Conversely, some items like certain medications have been noted as cheaper in the Netherlands. The non-food discounter Action is also expanding rapidly in the region, offering low prices on a rotating assortment, though price-per-unit comparisons suggest benefits vary by product type.

Regulatory and logistical differences also impact visitors. In the Netherlands, shops often have different operating hours, including being open on Sundays, though they may close earlier on weekdays than in Germany. Additionally, a nationwide ban on private consumer fireworks is set to take effect in the Netherlands starting August 1, 2026.
