Netherlands Implements Nationwide Consumer Fireworks Ban
From 1 August 2024 the Dutch government enforced a nationwide ban on consumer fireworks, prohibiting possession and use of fireworks by the public around New Year’s Eve. The law allows municipalities to issue limited exemptions for local clubs or associations, but many local authorities remain undecided. Almelo has pledged to keep a total ban, while Kampen intends to grant exemptions for community groups.
The ban has a major impact on the fireworks trade. Only child‑grade (F1) fireworks may be sold year‑round; all other consumer fireworks are barred from sale. Roughly 50 of the country’s 850 fireworks retailers expect to stay open for the upcoming holiday season. The government set aside €100 million for compensation, but most of the funds are directed to importers rather than the small retailers who face the loss of a seasonal income stream.
